Making a Ton Aircraft Disappear is Impossible. Many people consider the B-2 an engineering marvel and one of the finest example of American air superiority. Northrop Grumman is the B-2 prime contractor leading an industry team that works with the Air Force to modernize the B The revolutionary approach to bring the B-2 Spirit to life is as unique as the technologies that resulted from it.
In July , B-2 marked 30 years since its first flight. The aircraft transformed into a highly advanced bomber with improved avionics technology, stealth and armament. The new material, known as alternate high-frequency material AHFM , is sprayed on by four independently controlled robots.
A new transportable hangar system was developed, which allows the B-2 to be deployed to forward locations overseas. The hangars are ft long, ft wide and 55ft high.
The first of these hangars has been erected on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. The two pilots ejected safely from the aircraft, which was not carrying munitions. A USAF investigation into the causes of the crash is underway. The fleet was grounded pending the results of the investigation but was returned to service in April A USAF investigation released an accident report in June , which concluded that the crash was caused by moisture in the port transducer units. These sensors sent distorted information to the air data system.
This is done to ensure that craft remains fully mission capable against evolving worldwide threats. In June , Northrop Grumman was awarded a contract to develop an EHF satellite communications capability and computer architecture upgrade for the B-2 bomber. Flight testing with the new systems was completed in July Defense News partnered with independent journalist and long-time radio personality Jeff Bolton for a multimedia report that takes an up-close look at the U.
