Why a two speed reel

Well from what I have seen and my experiances with the small 2 speed reels vs star drags has been that to get the smoothness and consistantcy with the star drags right out of the box you need to do upgrades and for most anglers it becomes a pain in the ass because they prefer not to do them themselves and hate having to drop them off somewhere else and pay the few extra bucks when they beleive the reel should work perfectly right out of the box.

In a prolong fight star drags are stacked and have a more difficult time dissapating the heat and will still skip and stick at times causing the loss of a nice fish. The twin drag technology of the Accurate dissapate the heat well and will hold a more consistant drag pressure even as the spool empties and increases the drag pressure evectively slowing a fish down.

The Avets work in a similar fashion with their single drag system, they disapate the heat well and are very consistant in holding drag pressure. I have tested both reels drag system and find the only advantage the Accurates have is basically an unlimited drag and Avets advantage is their casting ability. Unlimited drag for the Accurates gives you more versatility in fishing with different line classes while the Avets can fish a level or two above there stated line class as well.

But the reels sure do look nice. DaBigOno said:. Waiohinu Lawaia dabuggashakeshakehenohemo. Yep, IMO two-speed reels are not needed for fishing anything under 80lb, heck, two speed reels are not needed for any kind of line class. But, like everything else spectra, flourocarbon, ringed hooks, shiny reels, butterfly jigs, etc.

I bought my dad a Penn 10kg two-speed graphite now called something else to replace his 25 TLDs. While the reel was about the same price used vs. Plus with 80lb spectra straight to the leader, instead of 50lb mainline, should he hook a decent ahi, he can pull a little harder But my brother still uses his TLD 25s on the same fish, although he can catch a couple more by the end of the day on the two-speed.

But, IMO two speed on anything under 50lb is just a waste of money Waiohinu Lawaia said:. Jan 7, 2 mexico Name david jones Boat cabo , christina. The question was 2 speed versus single, as I recall, not lever versus star drag. I would echo and amplify the "don't need it up to 80", maybe beyond. Unless you're cranking the fish in with your rod resting on the rail, and then you still can't crank any harder than the drag will allow, you are recovering line through body mechanics and technique and storing it on the reel.

While we're at it, I still don't understand how Shimano and now others can claim that the cut of their single speed gears gives you both power low gear ratio attribute and speed high gear ratio attribute. Might be the use of Jet Age Polyvendum! Will the "anti gravity reel" be next?

And as long as this train is leaving the station, how about the guys with the little bitty spools A who claim hi speed from their hi gear ratios.

Sorry, the physics had to get out of me at some point. I feel cleansed, but I still own a couple of two speeds, cuz I'm achin' to look cool. Allen Newbie. Save your money on small 2 speeds and get the reels needed to for each situation. Lighter lines means longer rods.

Heavier lines means shorter rods for leverage. Bottom fishing larger bait use a 2 speed reel. Iron fishing bottom use a high retrieve, not nessisarily high gear ratio. The newel 5. I have yet to have any 2-speed compare to it's speed. I always take an extra newell for back up.

I've burned out the drags a few times. This past February I was at the fishing tackle show in China. After 3 days at the show I'm sold on sticking with the experts. None of the manufactures there know about fishing. I'm referring to broom stick rods, knock off 2 speed reels and outdated tackle. They did have great marlin lures, belly belts, kevlar gloves and all the other stuff for tackling up a boat. The bonito lures, rapala type and other billed lures aren't tank tested and if you don't take the time to set them they will do nothing but twist your lines or tangle the other trollers.

My limited advise is match reels to rods, set ups to fish and retrieve ratios to target certain spiecies. It's almost imposible now to get a reel with free spool adjustment not linked to the drag system.

I still have a couple of jig masters that every time I change line I reset the free spool. The 2 speed reels have so many parts that the average person is not going to disasemble them every year for a complete cleaning and lubricating. My point is to pay attention to line capacity and size, retrieve amounts per crank, cast ability without resetting the drag and durability of the reel itself. Just because it costs more doesn't mean it's better.

The fish we are targeting only live for one thing to eat and it shouldn't be too hard to out think them. The problem I see is too many people try to out think themselves with having pretty tackle to impress other fishermen. We are not the ones to impress if you want to catch fish. Let the fish tell you what they like. Sounds like everyone has an opinion about this topic. I cant wait to try out my new MXL 2 speed this weekend! Kinda like cheating Why do women need more than one pair of sensible shoes?

It is our god given right as fishermen and women to have whatever the hell we want. I'm gonna go buy a two speed now. Hell, buy two, or maybe a 4 speed? Like the dog lickin' his balls. Understood, absolutely, got a couple myself, reels that is, well, and balls too, but I can't get the other part down, haven't tried lately. Not trying to say that they aren't worth it, should be illegal, or cause cancer. Your money. It was originally asked as a NEED question. I wants lots o' stuff that I don't need.

Dual core CPU's? I just slid a Quad core Xeon on slot 7 Ten speed bikes? Camera Phones with MP3 players? Any Apple product? This is the 21st fucking century - get over it.

Yes there are 2peed 20,30 and 40 reels. Soon to 3 speed. What is truly a waste of money is a Shimano Torsa! Why is a waste. TunaTommy Member. Allen, That's damn good advice. As the military learned the hard way, you buy either a fighter or a bomber, because one that can do both is not nearly as good as one that does one thing well. I now buy stuff for specific applications. Good fishing, TT. This highly efficient drag system was designed to increase maximum drag pressure and to improve heat dissipation for long-term smoothness.

Okuma utilizes Cal Sheet's Universal Drag Grease to prevent corrosion and provide the smoothest, most efficient drag system possible.
