Located in the eastern part of the state along its border with North Carolina, the Clingmans Dome — rises to an elevation of 6,ft 2,m. It is also the third-highest point in the Appalachian Mountain range; of which only Mt. Mitchell in North Carolina 6, ft. Craig 6, ft. Mitchell State Park rise higher than the Clingmans Dome. The Cumberland Plateau is a run of flat hills, valleys, and round top mountains that stretches north from Chattanooga to the Kentucky border.
Situated to the southwest of Chattanooga, the Lookout Mountain at 1, ft, provides views of seven states on a clear day.
West of the Cumberland Plateau, the somewhat flat highlands stretch east, and then drop down into the Nashville Basin, forming an area of productive farmland. The Gulf Coastal Plain extends across the southern states into southern Illinois. In Tennessee, the plain begins as hilly land to the west of the Tennessee River, which slowly levels-out as it approaches the state's western edge.
In the southwestern corner near Memphis it becomes a swampy lowland flood plain ending along the steep bluffs fronting the Mississippi River Delta.
The major rivers of Tennessee include the Cumberland, Tennessee, and the Mississippi rivers. Big Bald , a lofty, but broad summit, is considered the monarch of the Bald Mountains and the most popular destination in this small subrange of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This set of summits is largely protected by the Cherokee National Forest and is one of the most primitive, undeveloped areas in the eastern United States. The 3,acre Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, a popular hiking destination in the northeastern Unicois, is also home to one of the last remaining old growth cove hardwood forests in the eastern United States.
The Roan Highlands, in particular, are often revered as one of the most scenic portions of the Appalachian Trail. This area earns its name from the Roan Mountain ridge and contains the longest stretch of grassy balds in the Appalachian Mountains. The park also offers over miles of scenic roadway to explore. The mile Newfound Gap, which connects Gatlinburg, Tennessee to Cherokee, North Carolina , is the lowest drivable pass through the Smokies and offers some of the most scenic views in the region.
