That's why ultra-wealthy people hire an organization or individual to manage their philanthropy. They gave their money away before they had a lot to give. Generosity is part of one's character, not a result of one's net worth. My wealthy friends were making generous donations before they became wealthy.
As their wealth grew, so did the amount of their donations. They don't give their money to anyone who asks. Instead, they give to causes that they truly believe in. Generosity is a two-way street. The receiver benefits from the money. But the giver benefits from the joy of giving. Wealthy givers enjoy the fulfillment that comes from contributing to causes that excite them. They don't give their money to individuals. This may come as a surprise, but most wealthy people avoid giving their money to individual people.

Instead, they choose not to spend money in areas that they don't care about. Did I practice gratitude today? No matter your net worth, there is always something to be thankful for. And those places have billionaires.
So billionaires are concentrated and spikey but I think they are less concentrated and spikey than the high tech industry or the financial markets are. Billionaires track the size of a city. The bigger the city is the more likely it is to have more billionaires. Like one of the things I would have thought is that denser cities would have more billionaires. Billionaires are totally associated with the economic output, the GDP of the city.
So I think the pattern is a little bit confounding of what you would think. Billionaires are spikey but they have this kind of unique pattern which many of them are tied to places where they made their wealth. In some cases that goes back generations. Millionaires and billionaires, generally speaking do not migrate for tax rates. And billionaires and millionaires are tied to industries. And those industries require them, and those companies require them to live near the companies and industries and places they make wealth.
But for most people their wealth is tied to like an actual set of organizations, industries, factories, places. And the other thing our study shows which I thought was really interesting, we had all sorts of indicators of quality of life and quality of place. None of them were positively and significantly associated with a billionaire location.
